Relocation in Nevada
Americans have been moving to Nevada since the
quickest way to Reno was by covered wagon, but recently Nevada's been coping
with an influx of new residents that dwarfs anything that came before. During
the 1990s, Nevada was the fastest growing state in the U.S. The population
of this dry, wide open Western state jumped more than 66%. When it comes down
to it, newcomers are still being drawn to Nevada for the same reasons they
were in 1859, when miners struck silver in Virginia City: the lure of easy
money and better living.
This time around, Nevada's riches are more likely
to be found on a dim casino floor than in the side of a mountain (though mining
is a major player in the state; Nevada is still the top producer of gold in
the U.S., and is second only to South Africa in the world). Nevada isn't the
only place in America where gambling is legal (even encouraged), but to look
at the towering, fantasy theme casinos and glittering lights along Las Vegas'
famed strip, it's hard to imagine anyone would want to play anywhere else.
Most of Nevada's recent growth has occurred in the strip's shadow; in suburbs
like Henderson and North Las Vegas, where a housing boom has allowed pit bosses
and tour guides to buy into Nevada's version of the American dream.
Now that you're moving to Nevada, there are a
couple things you'll want to keep in mind:
- Nevada's population is 1,998,257. Nevada's state capital is Carson City.
- Nevada has roughly one slot machine for every ten residents.
- Though summer highs can easily pass 100°, Nevada means "snow
clad" in Spanish.
- Nevada became a state in 1864, in part to ensure that Abraham Lincoln
would have enough electoral votes to win re-election.
- Because Nevada entered the Union during the Civil War, its state flag
features the phrase "battle born," even though no battles ever
took place in the state.
- Camels were used to traverse Nevada's long, empty trade routes as late
as 1870.
- In Eureka, Nevada it's illegal for men with moustaches to kiss women.
