Relocation in Illinois
From one angle, Illinois' claim to be "the
Land of Lincoln" looks perfectly credible. In Springfield, Illinois (the
state capital) where Lincoln practiced law in the 19th century, perfectly
preserved brick storefronts and picket fences stand not far from where neighbors
still discuss prospects for the winter wheat crop. From another, it's hard
to imagine that Illinois could seem more foreign to anyone, however great,
from Lincoln's age. It's hard to imagine what Abe would think of his Illinois
as he gazed up at the Sears Tower, the tallest building in North America.
How long would it take him to figure out Chicago's elevated trains? Could
he hitchhike his way back down I-55, Illinois' main North-South artery connecting
Chicago and Springfield? If he was lucky, Abe might stumble across a horse
and buggy driven by a member of one of downstate Illinois' numerous Amish
communities.
There's one element of Illinois, though, that
Lincoln would still recognize - in a heartbeat. "To this place, and the
kindness of these people, I owe everything," he said, on leaving Illinois
for Washington D.C. in 1861. Whether they live in the shadow of Chicago's
office towers, or in the pervasive quiet of its farm belt, Illinois residents
still effuse the warm Midwest common sense and charm to which America owes
so much.
Now that you're moving to Illinois, there are
a couple things you'll want to remember:
- The population of Illinois is 12,419,293.
- Illinois' name comes from the Illiniwek, the Native American tribe that
first settled here.
- Lincoln isn't the only President to hail from Illinois. Ronald Reagan
was born in Tampico, Illinois.
- Illinois has more drivers with vanity license plates than any other state
in America.
- Every St. Patrick's Day, Chicago officials dye the Chicago River green.
- Illinois has two major league baseball teams, the Chicago Cubs and the
Chicago White Sox.
- Collinsville, Illinois is home to the world's largest ketchup bottle.
- In Normal, Illinois, it's against the law to make faces at dogs.
