Relocation in West Virginia
"West Virginia / Mountain Momma / Take Me
Home / Country Roads," John Denver famously sang. That single lyric,
and a handful of redneck jokes over the office water cooler, is how most Americans
come to know West Virginia. Since 80% of it is covered by forest, and the
state is the second most rural in the country, West Virginia isn't an easy
state to get acquainted with. But once you do, you'll find that a handful
of rhymes can't do West Virginia justice. Though it calls itself "the
Mountain State," there are very few mountains in West Virginia. West
Virginia actually owes its steep topography - towering cliffs and dramatic
canyons - to several crisscrossing plateaus. And though at first glance it
may seem to swell with Southern pride, West Virginia was the only state in
the Union to secede from the Confederacy during the Civil War.
West Virginia's quality of life isn't quite what
you might expect either. Coal mining, West Virginia's unofficial state profession,
used to be a dirty, dangerous and cruelly underpaid job. Today, West Virginia's
coal miners are some of the best paid in the industry. Combined with the state's
remarkably low crime rates and low cost of living, it's a wonder more people
aren't traveling country roads back home to West Virginia.
Now that you're moving to West Virginia, there
are a couple facts you'll want to remember:
- West Virginia's population is 1,808,344. West Virginia's state capital
is Charleston.
- Mother's Day was first observed in Grafton, West Virginia in 1908.
- The average age of a West Virginia resident is 40; older than in any
other state.
- West Virginia's trees are old too. The oldest sycamore in the world is
in Webster Springs, West Virginia.
- West Virginia was the first state to institute a sales tax, in 1921.
It was also the first state to open a federal prison exclusively for female
inmates, in 1926.
- West Virginia's hot springs have been drawing tourists in need of a good
soak for years - centuries even. America's first spa opened in Berkeley
Springs in 1756.
- In Nicholas County, West Virginia it's illegal for preachers or priests
to tell a joke during their sermons.
