Relocation in Washington

If you’ve noticed you don’t have quite as many neighbors as you used to, you might want to look for them in Washington state. Washington state (not to be confused with the homonymous Washington, D.C.) has been coping with a flood of new residents ever since America took notice of grunge rock and premium coffee in the early ‘90s. Since then, Washington – once a backwater of salmon fishermen and loggers – has been moving into the American mainstream (with Starbucks and Microsoft popping up everywhere) as fast as Americans can move to Washington

When you think of Washington, chances are you think of tall fir trees, endless rain and Eddie Bauer clad outdoor enthusiasts. All three are right and all three are wrong. Eastern Washington is densely forested and soggy (Washington actually doesn’t get that much rain annually, it just gets a little every day), but once you travel over the Cascades, Washington’s landscape becomes drier and flatter, more West than Northwest. Washingtonians can’t get enough of the great outdoors. Who could, when being outdoors means kayaking on Lake Washington or hiking the rugged shore of a Puget Sound island? But Washington also has a claim on the great indoors. Seattle recently completed a shockingly modern redesign of its public library and the Experience Music Project museum is the best musical exhibit on the West Coast.

Now that you’re moving to Washington, there are a couple facts you’ll want to keep in mind:

  • Washington’s population is 5,894,121. Seattle is Washington’s largest city, but Olympia is the state capital.
  • Washington state grows more apples than any other state in the country.
  • Though Washington is named after General George Washington (it’s the only state to be named for a president), Mount Rainier, the highest peak in Washington, is name after Peter Rainier, a British soldier who fought against George Washington in the revolutionary war.
  • You probably know Starbucks started out in Seattle, but did you know soft serve ice cream began in Olympia, Washington? The first soft serve machine is in an Olympia Dairy Queen.
  • There’s something about Washington that’s musical: Washington was the birthplace of both Jimmy Hendrix and Bing Crosby.
  • Washington state law makes it a crime to pretend one’s parents are rich.
