Relocation in Tennessee
America marches to the beat of Tennessee's drummer
- and guitarist and bassist and vocals. The unique rhythm of Tennessee life
has spawned musicians and styles that are heard around the world. In Memphis,
at the extreme southwest tip of Tennessee where the state's rich farmland
meets the Mississippi, you can stroll down Beale Street, where the blues were
born and legends like B.B. King still play live shows. And if you don't mind
gaudy zebra print wallpaper, you can drop by Graceland, Elvis' former fortress
of solitude. Another shrine to the King is at Sun Studios, where transplanted
Tennessee resident Presley recorded his first single. A couple of hours northwest
on I-40 will take you to Tennessee's other musical Mecca, Nashville. From
a humble country and western variety show in the 1920s, the Grand Ole' Opry
has transformed this small city on the Cumberland River to the undisputed
Country Music Capital of the World. Farther east, between the back roads and
rural hamlets of the Great Smoky Mountains (so named for the blue-ish fog
that sometimes fills the valleys) it's not unusual to hear a lonely banjo
twang echo off steep canyon walls.
Now that you're moving to Tennessee, there are
a couple facts you'll want to keep handy:
- Tennessee's population is 5,689,283. Nashville is Tennessee's state capital.
- Tennessee earned its nickname, "the Volunteer State," during
the war of 1812 when the state's militia performed bravely at the Battle
of New Orleans. Tennessee's moniker still has some truth to it. More National
Guard soldiers from Tennessee were deployed during the 1991 Gulf War than
those from any other state.
- Tennessee has more than 3,800 caves.
- Elvis' mansion at Graceland is the second most visited house in the country,
just behind the White House.
- If Elvis is Tennessee's favorite son, Dolly Parton is easily the state's
favorite daughter. A native of Sevierville, the singing star has a state
highway named after her: the Dolly Parton Parkway.
- In Tennessee, state law prohibits collecting and eating roadkill.
