Relocation in Oklahoma

Why describe Oklahoma when someone's already sung everything there is to say? Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain / And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet / When the wind comes right behind the rain. / Oklahoma! And while the song is a little short on details, there must be something special about Oklahoma if there's a whole musical about it (when was the last time anyone wrote an operetta about North Dakota?).

In the early 19th century, Oklahoma was widely considered empty and useless; the Federal government turned the whole state into a reservation for Native American tribes who'd been evicted from richer areas. Today in Oklahoma, it can be hard to find where the state's Native American heritage ends and its Anglo-American heritage begins (Oklahoma still has one of the largest Native communities in the country). During the late 19th century, white homesteaders swarmed into Oklahoma and in the early 20th century, profited from an oil boom.

Oklahoma still pumps oil and natural gas (there's even a functioning rig on the state capitol grounds in Oklahoma City), and farming will always be central to the state's Great Plains feel, but today most Oklahomans maintain their homestead by working in finance, government or aircraft manufacturing. And between working in urban centers like Tulsa and kicking back in Oklahoma's renowned wide open spaces, most state residents aren't shy singing You're doin' fine, Oklahoma! / Oklahoma O.K.

Now that you're moving to Oklahoma, there are a couple things you'll want to keep in mind:

  • Oklahoma's population is 3,450,654. The state capital is Oklahoma City.
  • The National Cowboy Hall of Fame is located in Oklahoma City.
  • Oklahoma is known as "the Sooner State" because in 1889, Oklahoma land was being given away on a single day when settlers would race into the territory and stake their claim. Settlers who cheated by slipping into Oklahoma before the rush started and grabbed the best land were called "Sooners."
  • Yield signs and parking meters were both invented in Oklahoma.
  • Oklahoma is proud of its frontier personality, but still, state law prohibits wearing your boots to bed.
