Relocation in New Jersey
New Jersey may call itself the Garden State,
but few monikers are as misleading. New Jersey does have some notable natural
assets - among the most idyllic, miles of windy, sandy beaches that line the
state's Atlantic coast around Cape May. But for better or worse, New Jersey's
environment is a habitat better suited to mall rats and couch potatoes than
deer or wildflowers. The state can be seen as three not-entirely-distinct
parts. Northern New Jersey is more gritty and urban, and generally falls within
New York City's orbit. Central New Jersey is mostly suburban, and Southern
New Jersey is often counted as an extension of metro Philadelphia.
From the platforms of Jersey City's commuter
trains to Atlantic City's boardwalk, New Jersey can feel like a single, almost
endless city. 90% of New Jerseyans live in one or another of New Jersey's
urban areas. The population density of New Jersey is triple the national average.
The state has the country's highest concentration of highways and railroads
as well, along with a twenty-five square mile area in Northern New Jersey
that boasts seven shopping malls (the highest concentration in the world).
Rockers Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi both grew up in New Jersey and
have both sung about its industrial ups and urban downs. But to make up your
mind about New Jersey's uniquely modern landscape you'll just have to move
there yourself.
Now that you're moving to New Jersey, there are
a few things you'll want to keep in mind:
- New Jersey is home to 8,414, 350 residents. The state capital is Trenton.
- New Jersey is the largest producer of industrial chemicals in the nation,
a distinction that's earned it less than laudable marks on pollution and
environmental health measures. The state also has 108 toxic waste dumps,
making it first in the nation again.
- Play Monopoly? All the street names in the game come from actual streets
in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
- Thomas Edison was at his most prolific when he was inventing in New Jersey:
he came up with the record player, light bulb and motion picture projector
here.
- When you pull into a New Jersey gas station, don't bother getting out
of the car. All gas stations in the state are full-service only.
Life in New Jersey will be more exciting than you think. Check below for some fun attractions in Jersey that you never knew existed:
- Freefall Adventure: At this establishment, one can jump out of an airplne 14,000 feet in the air and hurdle towards Earth. In other words, skydiving. Don't forget to ask to have your video taken!
- Atlantic City: This coastal city is the closest you'll get to an "East Coast Las Vegas." Casinos, hotles, shows, the beach; what more could you ask for?
- Hamilton: In this town you can experience a museum come to life. The entire city is layered with sculptures big and small, and the official exhibit can be found at Grounds for Sculpture. This outdoor museum features dozens of brilliant sculptures that could have your staring for hours.
