Relocation in Kentucky
When Americans began relocating to Kentucky,
it wasn't quite what it is today. Back then the state was a woodland wilderness,
and its residents were rough and tumble: during the 19th century the state
was famous for its prize exports: Kentucky Whiskey and Kentucky Rifles.
Today, Kentucky is a little more family friendly.
New residents can find themselves in tiny, laid-back country hamlets or 21st
century cities like Louisville and Lexington. You can spend your weekends
cheering the NCAA University of Kentucky Wildcats or just strolling barefoot
through Kentucky's signature bluegrass meadows. Looking for a little local
culture? Bluegrass music is to Kentucky what jazz is to Louisiana. Live performances
are never hard to find. Of course, you won't want to miss the Kentucky Derby.
As the most famous horse race in the world, the Kentucky Derby draws hundreds
of thousands of racing fans from all over the world to Louisville for a week
of parades, poetry readings and parties.
There are a couple other details you'll want
to know about Kentucky before you move:
- Frankfort is Kentucky's state capital. It's located between Lexington
and Louisville along the Kentucky River. During the Civil War, Frankfort
was the only Union capital occupied by Confederate troops.
- Kentucky bluegrass, which is actually a deep shade of green, thrives
throughout the state. It grows so well in part because much of Kentucky's
bedrock is limestone, and the particular minerals it gives off are excellent
for nourishing plants.
- Kentucky's economy is a dynamic mix of old and new. Bourbon distilleries
and horse farms are still big business in the state. But Kentucky is also
home to important auto manufacturing and higher education facilities.
- Muhammad Ali, the brash and iconic world heavyweight boxing champ, was
born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville in 1942.
- The population of Kentucky was 4,041,769 in 2000, ranking 25th in the
United States. The largest city is Louisville.
- The world's most frequently sung song, "Happy Birthday to You,"
was written by two Kentucky sisters. Mildred and Patricia Hill, from Louisville,
wrote it in 1893, with the original title "Good Morning to All."
- Middlesboro, Kentucky is the only city in America located inside a meteor
crater.
