Relocation in Arkansas
Most Americans know Arkansas through its favorite sons. "The Man in Black,"
vocalist Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas. Sam Walton, founder
of Wal-Mart, opened his first store in Bentonville, Arkansas and former President
Bill Clinton still looms large over the state, even though he lives in New
York now.
But to get to what's really unique about Arkansas, you have to look past the
people, to the state itself. While it doesn't have Colorado's
towering Rockies, or Alaska's glaciers, Arkansas isn't nicknamed "the Natural
State" for nothing. Arkansas is the only place in America where careful diggers
can pull diamonds from the ground. In Western Arkansas, the Ouachita Mountains
and Ozark Plateau (collectively known as the Arkansas Highlands by locals)
reach upwards one last time, before the flat, Great Plains begin to roll.
It's in the Highlands where Arkansas' 9,700 miles of rivers begin. The Buffalo
River is one of the last unpolluted, free-flowing rivers in the lower 48 states.
It, and others, contribute to Arkansas' excellent freshwater fishing opportunities;
especially on the Arkansas River or in Bull Shoals Lake. If angling doesn't
catch your interest, Arkansas is a great place to just soak. The natural spas
at Hot Springs, Arkansas are some of the oldest and best in America.
Now that you're moving to Arkansas, there are a couple facts you'll want to
remember:
- The population of Arkansas is 2,673,400. Arkansas' state capital is Little
Rock.
- Arkansas comes from a French variation of a Sioux word, "acansa," meaning
"place downstream."
- Arkansas is the only state in America that has written the correct pronunciation
of its name (ar-kan-saw) into law.
- Residents of Arkansas are called Arkansans (ar-kan-sawns).
- According to Arkansas state law, alligators may not be kept in bathtubs.
- The official state musical instrument of Arkansas is the fiddle.
- In Fayetteville,
Arkansas it's illegal to walk your cow down Main Street after 1 p.m. on
a Sunday.
