But in the late 1580’s the colony of North Carolina was formed by Sir Walter Raleigh (the capital is named after him – Raleigh). In this colony Virginia Dare was born. She was the first English child to be born in North America. Also, the famous lost colony of Roanoke was also formed in North Carolina.
