I just wanted to add that our experience with these guys to move from California to Philadelphia last year was absolutely horrible. They put our furniture in a public storage and didn't give us the key until we paid full amount - all because we were not available when they called us at 11 p.m. on Friday to say that we must be ready to pick up 7 a.m. on Saturday. We had to move from the storage to the apartment at our own expense. Furniture was scratched. TV didn't work. Boxes were broken open and contents spilled all over the storage unit. Reaching them over the phone was nearly impossible, and if you did they were rude and had no information. If you have any doubts - check them out on the better business bureau.

Subject: Would NEVER use them again

My move originated in Spokane, WA and ended in Dublin, OH. The estimated quote was approximately $2200. The final cost was about $3000.

The pick up was scheduled for a Saturday and they came at 11PM on SUNDAY night - and ONLY because I insisted they come that night so I didn't have to miss work the next day. I then had to pay the driver in cash for a long carry - which was actually within the distance that's supposed to be "included." They also resealed all of my boxes and charged me $8 a roll for their tape.

Delivery was 3 1/2 weeks late, and at one point when I contacted them, they didn't even know where my stuff was. Again, on delivery there was a fee for the long carry that was unnecessary.

For the icing on the cake, everything that I hadn't packed myself was damaged in some way. All of my tables, chairs, bookcases, sofa, mattress, EVERYTHING. The damaged ranged from scratches and tears to complete destruction. My conservative estimate on the damages was over $3000 - about equal to the cost of my move.

I submitted my claim to them three months ago and still have not heard back.

Subject: Sad service, truly sad

Movers sent one person who took 3 hours to move a jr one bedroom...with *no* furniture, just boxes and a large TV. He was slow, did not know much about billing and was on his cell phone until I told him to stop and get busy. Next, items arrived weeks late and once here, I am missing 4 boxes. Stereo speakers, personal items, kitchen items and gifts for my nieces and nephews. Terrible customer service - how can you lose boxes when you put numbered stickers on them? I'd hate to see what happens when they move more than a few boxes! EEEEK!!! We'll see what happens when I go thru BBB. Untrustworthy and unprofessional. Will likely be out of business within a year, my guess.

Subject: Poor Service

I am very disappointed with the service I received. The movers lost the box that contained the parts for reassembling several pieces of furniture (master bed, dining room table, CD rack). The master bed is unusual and replacement parts cannot be obtained from a standard furniture or hardware store. Several pieces of our furniture were damaged very badly. The headboard of our master bed has a big, highly visible chunk missing, the copper (patina treated) dining room table top was not wrapped and there are major scratches. We had an artist look at it to see about repair and he said it is not possible. The dining room set was over $2500. Many pieces of wood had small chips missing. I have requested a damage claim form three times, but have received nothing. To top it off, the service cost over two times the estimate and was more than Graebel, whose service is very high end, but I opted for Trans United because the quote was half. I guess it's true that you get what you pay for. We are still without a master bed and I cannot get through to them. I would never recommend this firm to anyone that cares about their belongings. I feel robbed of $7,000(paid by myself, not a company).

I received the worst service you could ever imagine. Everything was handled great until delivery, when I received my furniture in bad condition. I was bluntly lied to over the phone many times and run around in circles with no call backs. Do not use this company you will regret it!

I got nothing but the best customer service from Trans United Van Lines who moved me from San Antonio, TX to Pasadena, TX. This moving company and their movers really did an outstanding job moving my things. I was really happy to see the movers work so hard to make sure none of my things were damaged. When they arrived to my new location everything was put where I wanted and put together. Thank you Trans United Van Lines for outstanding service.

Estimate, Documents and Delivery

The first step in the process is obtaining an estimate.

Planning (The Estimate)

It's the most important part of every move. So planning has become a specialty of Trans U.S. Moving & Storage, Inc.. From supplying the correct packing materials and labor through loading, safe driving and unpacking, we make sure every possibility is anticipated and every need is met. From start to finish, we handle the details.

Our qualified Relocation Specialists are trained to work with you on your estimate and plan your move. We calculate your move cost by taking the size of your move, figuring out the distance based on the point of origin and destination zip codes, and determining if any special services are needed. Trans U.S. Moving & Storage, Inc., offers a variety of services beyond the basic move including Packing and Unpacking Services, Storage, and assistance with your car transport.

Purpose

The purpose of the estimate is to furnish you with an approximate cost of your move. We will discuss packing services, valuation, your move schedule and all special services required. When your moving schedule has been set, notify your sales representative immediately to schedule your desired pick-up and delivery dates. The last week of a month and the period from May through September are extremely busy, and Advance notice is recommended.

The Delivery

Any remaining balance is due at time of delivery by Cash or Postal Money Order only. The driver begins unloading when the payment is received. Check with your sales representative prior to moving day to determine if credit card payment is accepted and what restrictions may apply.

The Documents

Your driver will present you with the Bill of Lading. This authorizes the carrier to transport your goods. Your driver is also required to complete a Household Goods Descriptive Inventory of items included in the shipment with a brief note of their condition. You will be then asked to sign the Inventory. If any additional services are necessary, the Additional Services Performed Origin/Destination Service and Delivery Report must also be completed by the driver and signed by you.

Unloading

As unloading begins, check off items received from your copy of the Inventory. The crew unloading your moving van is only required to place furniture once, so have a placement plan in mind. Be aware that unpacking services include taking packed items out of cartons and placing them on a table or counter. If the moving crew does your unpacking, you may request that they dispose of the used materials and containers when they have finished. Unpacking service is not included in the quote. If you opt for that service, you may request this service from your representative.

Claims

Although every effort will be made to see that your belongings arrive intact, there may be incidents when loss or damage occurs. In that event, completely unpack all your goods. Compile a list of any damaged or missing items. Locate the registration number from your Bill of Lading and call the Customer Service Department. Claim forms will be mailed promptly. You have two months from date of delivery to file your claim. However, it is suggested that you file as soon as possible.

,b>Deducting Moving Expenses

Regardless of whether or not they file an itemized return, all taxpayers meeting the following conditions qualify to deduct certain moving expenses:

  • You are moving to a new principle residence to work as an employee or as a self-employed individual at a new principle place of work and your new job is at least 50 miles farther from your former residence than your old job location.
  • You must remain a full-time employee in the general vicinity of the new job location for 39 weeks within the first 12 months following the move.
  • If you are self-employed, you must remain in the new location, as self-employed or as an employee, for 78 weeks during the first 24 months following your move, and 39 weeks must be in the first 12 months.

When determining your federal adjusted gross income, you can deduct the following expenses if they are not reimbursed by your employer:

  • Transportation costs from old to new residence.
  • Packing, crating and unpacking charges.
