Subject: Dishonest pricing and poor service

Quote ID :A496510
Move Origin :Silver Spring, MD
Move Destination :Silver Spring, MD
Initial Estimate :$276.00
Final Cost :$570.00
Don’t take it Personally, but Personal Touch Movers will fleece you. I asked a customer service representative four times if there would be any additional fees, taxes or charges on top of my $276 quote. She lied, she told me there would not be any additional charges. My receipt order did say there would be additional fees, but they were in no way spelled out or clearly stated. I figured her quote would at least be close to my final expenses. I was wrong. On moving day, the crew came 2 1/2 hours past their estimated arrival time. My $276 move quickly rose in price. $25 to wrap every piece of furniture, an additional 15% fuel charge, a $20 “documentation handling fee" and other inexplicable fees. The fees quickly mounted and my costs more than doubled to $570. I had to eliminate many pieces of furniture just to keep the expenses down. The whole move took under the estimated 3 hour time window, yet I was still charged for the three hours. I would have appreciated knowing about all of these charges up front, but the representative over the phone did not explain any of these fees to me. And again, they were not clearly stated or illustrated on the receipt order. They have quite a shady operation going, I am appalled that they are accredited by the Better Business Bureau. I would NOT recommend any of my friends or strangers to Personal Touch Movers.

I just wanted to say if you are considering using Personal Touch - DO NOT - they lied about everything from the beginning & had horrible attitudes (at least the ones that spoke English) & then asked for a tip!!!

Subject: Deception and Extortion

Quote ID :A495540
Move Origin :Frederick, MD
Move Destination :Frederick, MD
Initial Estimate :$900.00
Final Cost :$2,000.00
I hired this company based on a good BBB review and a realistic quote. The website provide various information including a link to a website which indicated one should expect up to 10% over the quoted price for the final price, to cover materials etc, no problem. On the day of the move, the move foreman delayed and deceived me regarding my request for a firm price until most of my household goods were loaded on to the truck. Then the foreman provided the cost. The quote cost was +/- $900. The final price was $2,200, including $1,200 for "materials.” At that point, my household goods were in the possession of this company. As soon as I questioned the increase in cost, the company resorted to extortion - without me paying the cost, they would not unload my household goods. If I refused to pay, they said they would store the household goods and charge me storage fees until such time as I paid or they went to court. Prior to the move, we specifically asked someone at the company named "Lucy" what it would cost for the company to take some of our older household goods to the landfill. 'Lucy" quoted a cost of $6 per item with a minimum of $100. On the day of the move, we identified about 22 items for disposal. The $6 per unit cost jumped to $50 per item, or $1,100 for the total. Thankfully, I had stopped them from putting these items on the truck. The company could not work any of their magic on these items. On the day of the move I called the company and asked to speak with "Lucy." First she was not available for an hour or so. Later she was not available for several days. I suspect "Lucy" does not exist. Probably another technique this company has learned over the years. Clearly this is one company to avoid. There are many reputable moving companies one can use, just not this one.

Blankets, Boxes, Wardrobes, Bubble Wrap.... PTM&T's all inclusive hourly price covers our able-bodied movers and all your packing needs. Tip: You can save in hours needed by packing easy, non breakables yourself.

When estimating the cost for local moves, you should consider the number of movers you may require, movers loading time, how long it would take to drive from your old residence to your new one and how much time it takes to unload there. The chart below will help give you an idea of how many hours and movers you may require if you choose to pre-pack yourself. Please note that there may be some variables including how much packing our professional team requires.

We require a minimum of three hours labor and one-hour travel time (between office and origin of move to new location and return to office), which is an industry standard.

Packing Tips

You can save a lot of money if you do the bulk of the packing on your own. Limit yourself to non-fragile items such as books, linens, clothing and shoes; and replaceable items such as plates, dishes (not fine china or expensive silverware), and small kitchen appliances.

Boxes and Packing Supplies

It pays to have the right packing materials. Sturdy boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing peanuts and blankets among other protective items, fill in with generous amounts of wadded newsprint, blankets and pillows can add extra protection between breakable objects.

Packing Techniques

  • Pack one room at a time, each box should be labeled with a description of its contents and its destination (such as “kitchen,” or “living room”). The more specific you can be, the easier it will make unpacking.
  • Keep the weight of your boxes reasonable. Heavy items are best packed in small boxes to make them easier to carry.
  • Tape should not be applied directly to polished or painted wood finishes. Removing the tape could ruin the surface.
  • Fragile items should be double-boxed with plenty of cushioning.

What You May Need for the First Night/Day

Prepare for the first night in your new home by packing essential items in a separate bag and carrying it with you. For each person in the household a change of clothes, a towel, prescription drugs, a toothbrush, and other personal items should be readily available. Plastic utensils, paper plates, paper towels, plastic cups, toilet paper, toiletries, trash bags, a flashlight, first aid kit including pain relievers, pencil and paper, snacks, beverages and plastic bags will come in handy.
