First, some background. The owner's name is Christopher Matthew Michael Colbert.
The other name of his company is Unity Moving and Storage, based in Houston (he also uses many other names for his company). He has no valid TxDOT license
or insurance and was issued an injunction to stop moving people in February
2006 by the State Attorney General. In late January of 2007, without knowing
any of this, we hired him to move us. He told us that he had a TxDOT license
and insurance and even charged us for insurance. He moved our belongings out
of our old house but did not show up at the new house with them, or call us
to tell us why he didn’t show up. We called him multiple times with no
answer. Finally, after we reported this to the Fort Bend County Sherriff and
had them call him, he returned our call and told us he was held up and didn’t
know when he could finish the move. We found out where his storage location
was and sent another moving company to get our stuff. He charged us $2500 to
let the second moving company get it (the original quote was $656). We found
almost $5000 in damages to our belongings and another few hundred dollars worth
of missing items. We filled out claim forms in February of this year, but he
denied our claims and said we were lying and the second moving company damaged
our belongings. We hired an attorney and sent a demand letter and ultimately
a lawsuit. The man filed bankruptcy and discharged us to his bankruptcy.
Christopher Matthew Michael Colbert has recently served time in the Brazos
County jail for 2 felony convictions, unrelated to our case (but related to
his moving company). The BBB throughout Texas has a mountain of paperwork evidence
that he has done this to many people since the 1990s – he fraudulently
lies about his moving credentials, charges for insurance he doesn’t have,
hires day laborers to do his moves, moves without a TxDOT license, routinely
damages large amounts of items, steals items, and ignores claims for damages. |
