Moving Tips
How to Pick a Moving Company
- Ensure that the company is licensed and insured. Note that there are some states, such as Utah, where licensing is not required.
- Ask whether the movers are full-time employees or day laborers.
- In the event of an interstate move (a move in which you are moving from one state to another), check with the Department of Transportation to see whether the moving company you are considering has a license to operate.
- Does the moving company pay workers compensation for their movers? Make sure that you are not liable if a mover gets injured on your premises! In some states, such as Utah, the company is required to have all movers insured, whether they are day laborers, or employees from a staffing agency.
- How do they charge? Typically movers will charge using one of the following a)hourly, b) by weight, or c) some combination of a and b.
Are there any additional fees? This is most common for extra large items, handling large/expensive items (pianos), etc.
- What are the procedures if a damage or loss occurs?
Organizing Tips
- Reduce clutter at your new home by holding a yard sale or donating to charity. This is a perfect time to get rid of those items that have been sitting unused in your garage or closet for the last few years.
- Fill out a change of address form at the post office to make sure your mail will be forwarded to you correctly.
- Stay away from perishable foods/items. Cook and eat any canned foods in the cupboards to help reduce the number of items that will have to be moved. Don't forget about leftovers!
- Keep a folder for all moving documents and moving related expenses for easy reference.
- Remember to return books on loan from the library, and don't forget to return any movie rentals!
- Don't forget to return anything that has been borrowed from neighbors!
Packing
- For boxes with delicate contents, clearly mark "Fragile" and/or "This Side Up" on the outside of the container to decrease the risk of damage.
- Set aside an essentials bag/box containing any personal necessities you may need for the first night at your new location.
- Used boxes are not always sturdy enough to hold heavy items. When in doubt, use a new box!
- Use bubble wrap, peanuts, and/or packing paper to wrap delicate items, fragile items, or items that can be easily scratched. Beware of newspapers! The black ink has a tendency to rub off.
- Label boxes with the names of the rooms that they need to go in to be unpacked.
- Pack heavier items in smaller boxes and lighter items in larger boxes.
- Pack dishes, pictures, and mirrors on their side/edge rather then flat. This will dramatically reduce the risk of breakage!
We offer a very basic pricing plan. Please Note that we require a 4 hour minimum per move.
