Want to be a part of it all? As Frank Sinatra would advise, try moving to New York. It doesn't seem like New York needs an introduction at all. New York is easy to remember, even (perhaps especially) if you've never been there: the Empire State Building, bright lights on Broadway and Times Square. But there's more to New York than the city that never sleeps; New York State covers almost 50,000 square miles. And while it's home to most of the state's population, economic might and creative energy, New York City covers less than 1% of it.

Few outside of New York know that "upstate New York" (all parts of the state North of New York City and Long Island) has one of the largest and least developed state parks - the Adirondack State Park - in the country. Upstate New York also offers excellent wineries, world class racing facilities (Saratoga for horses; Watkins Glen for cars), a number of exciting mid-sized cities and small towns that seem a world away from the hubbub of New York City (in fact, Seneca Falls, New York was the inspiration for Bedford Falls - the setting of the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life).

• New York City was America's first capital.
• The nickname "The Big Apple" was coined by African-American jazz musicians during the 1920s and '30s and refers to the "big time" status incurred by playing in New York.
• Horseheads, New York is the only village in the country to be dedicated to the service of America's military horses.
• In New York, it's illegal to carry an ice cream cone in one's pocket on Sundays.
