Moving to Idaho

Idaho, perhaps more than anywhere else on the left side of the Mississippi, is the prototypical Western state. For much of the 19th century, pioneers passed by Idaho’s mountainous terrain en route to greener pastures. It was only after gold was discovered in Idaho, in 1861, that people began to stay. The state’s name evinces the color of its early residents. When the first legislators were trying to decide what to name the territory, someone suggested Idaho – a word they claimed was an Indian term for “gem of the mountains.” As it turned out, Idaho meant no such thing; the man who’d suggested it had just made it up – but it stuck.

Today, anyone driving through Idaho on one of the state’s two main highways will notice that Idaho is still very much in touch with its frontier past. Large towns in Idaho are widely scattered, and there’s only one major city (Boise, the capital). Residents of southern Idaho are in Salt Lake City’s orbit, and residents of northern Idaho gravitate towards Spokane, Washington. Mining, for silver and lead, is still big business.

But as much as it remains the same, Idaho is slowly changing. During the 1990s businesses – including high tech microprocessor plants –migrated to Idaho, looking to take advantage of the highly educated local workforce and high quality of life. New residents weren’t far behind; over the last ten years, Idaho has been one of the fastest growing states in America.

Now that you’re moving to Idaho, there are a couple facts you’ll want to keep in mind:

  • Idaho’s population is 1,293,953.
  • Hell’s Canyon, Idaho, is the deepest gorge in America. But not all of Idaho’s nature is so natural. Soda Springs is the largest man-made geyser in the world.
  • From the summit of Heaven’s Gate Lookout, one the highest peaks in Idaho’s Seven Devils range, sightseers can see four states at once.
  • Sun Valley, Idaho is one of best ski resort destinations in the U.S.
  • In Idaho, state law makes it illegal for a man to give his sweetheart a box of chocolates that weighs less than 50 pounds.
