Relocation in Colorado

Colorado's state motto is "Nil Sine Numine" ("Nothing Without the Deity," in English), but for all intents and purposes, it might as well be "Rocky Mountain High." Colorado is to mountains what Hawaii is to beaches. Tens of thousands of skiers trek to Colorado towns like Vail, Aspen and Steamboat Springs each year in search of the best dry powder in the country. And Colorado companies, like Coors Brewery, use the image of snowcapped peaks to sell their goods across America. Colorado and America wouldn't be the same if the state was as flat as Texas. Without the Colorado Rockies, there wouldn't be any Colorado River, which means there wouldn't be any Grand Canyon, and most Western states would be too dry to live in.

But Colorado is more than its mountains. The eastern third of Colorado is high prairie, gently sloping but otherwise flat terrain that stretches to the Kansas and Nebraska borders. And most Coloradoans live along the I-25 corridor in the central part of the state, at the foot of the Colorado Rockies, not up in them. And while alpine hikers and campers keep Colorado's economy moving, sectors like software and transportation have become Colorado's bread and butter.

Now that you're moving to Colorado, there are a couple facts you'll want to remember:

  • Colorado's population is 4,301,261. Colorado's state capital is Denver.
  • Each year, thousands of Valentines are re-mailed from the post office in Loveland, Colorado.
  • There are 52 14,000 foot peaks in Colorado.
  • Colorado is Spanish for "colored red." A special red marble found only in Colorado, called Beulah Red, was used to build the Colorado statehouse in Denver. Don't bother looking for it in a catalog though; all the Beulah Red marble in Colorado was used in the capitol's construction. There's none left in the world.
  • Coloradoans love beer: in addition to Coors, Colorado boasts more microbreweries per capita than any other state.
  • Katherine Lee Bates composed "America the Beautiful" after being inspired by the view from Pike's Peak, near Colorado Springs.
  • In Colorado Springs, Colorado, it's legal to wear a revolver in a holster within city limits, except on Sundays, holidays or Election Day.
