What’s more annoying than a post-move, call to the internet and TV companies to set up a new account? Probably not much. Don’t just say you want cable and internet. Follow these steps to ensure you get the best package for the lowest price.
1. You’re highballed: You ask for their prices, and they'll give you a number. At first you think this price is pretty high, but you have no other choice. Wrong! You do have a choice. They’re just not telling you what it is. So take this first number and throw it away because there is always a way to get something better.
2. Ask a few questions: After you get the initial price, make sure to ask if there are any special deals. Such as, “Get cable internet and TV at the same time and save.” Often, internet and TV companies are always running promotions. If they say they’re not, don’t believe them. They’re most likely trying to trick you into getting a more expensive package.
3. First time customer: If it is your first time signing up with the company, make sure you ask them about discounts that first time customers get. Make sure to include:
- Installation
- Reduced price
- Free trial on bonus features
More likely than not, a first time customer is entitled to free instillation, a trial reduced price, and a free trial on bonuses (HBO, Showtime etc.).
4. Recap: Always, always ask to go over the plan again. Make sure you understand everything the person on the other line is saying, and make sure all the prices are where you want them to be. Ask one more time if there is anything cheaper, or better that was not mentioned.
After doing all these things, you should have a price comparatively lower to the initial price quote. If you’re satisfied now, then it’s time to order your internet and TV services. Even if you're not completely done moving in, at least you'll have internet and TV.
